Riverhead High School rowers Caitlyn Klein and
Eileen Belfield won the Novice Girls Double Sculls Event at the
Long Island Scholastic Sprints held on Meadow Lake in Queens, NY,
finishing in a time of 4:33. Finishing second and third were
Teaneck High School (NJ) and Montclair High School (NJ). More
than 1,200 high school rowers and 250 boats from New York, Connecticut
and New Jersey entered the regatta. This was Riverhead High
School’s second competition in the history of the school.
Last week the girls finished 3rd at the Princeton International
Scholastic Regatta.
Riverhead High School rowers Colleen Wilhelm and Kristin Lohneiss
were forced to wait another two weeks before their racing debut.
Their event, the girls novice quadruple sculls was cancelled due
to high winds and unrowable conditions. Ms. Wilhelm and Ms.
Loehneiss were teaming up with Ms. Belfield and Ms. Klein for the
event. Coach Al Borghard stated that he was disappointed that
the race was cancelled as the girls had been showing speed during
practices.
Riverhead High School will next race at the Long
Island Scholastic Championships scheduled for May 7th in Oyster
Bay, NY. Riverhead’s rowing team is organized through East
End Rowing and is coached by Al Borghard and Amy Hardy (Smith College
2004).
